Ohm Hourani

Assembling an ambitious bricolage of taut, percussive tech house and swinging, free jazz influences, Hourani brings the folkloric roots of his Eastern upbringing into the world of contemporary house music. Marked by a passion for seamless engineering and minimalistic flair, his releases thrum with the organic liveliness that comes from a passion for uncharted sonic exploration.

Born in Jordan, Hourani developed a club presence at an early age, building a formidable reputation in clubs from Lebanon to Beirut. Drawn to Montreal in 2009 to pursue a degree in electronic sound engineering at Musitechnic Institute, Hourani would go on to teach at the same Institute later in life, while honing the intricacies of sound engineering with his own fascination for vinyl culture and dance music. Hourani would go on to tweak his own strain of minimal, overweight low end and deep house soul through his Anoma label, including a much-lauded 2014 collaboration with Amsterdam house pioneer San Proper. Hourani sought out other opportunities for collaboration, such as multiple performances with Do Mi and her textural, eloquent vocal stylings, which elegantly share sonic real estate with his tightly rolling rhythms to evoke a kind of future-soul. Hourani’s first full length album Jazz of the Machine shows two impulses at work—a near-obsessive attention to the science behind programmed drum machines' frequencies and algorithms, and jazz's freewheeling improvisational chaos—Ricardo Villalobos meet Miles Davis.

It is with our great pleasure that we welcome Ohm Hourani & Gab to MINIM 007 series with their single “Vicho”. Supporting the single are two superb remixes from the ever-changing innovator Jay Tripwire & MINIM Records own Ruslan.

Gab

Gabriel Ramirez (Gab) Montreal born dj/producer, at age of two he moved with his family to Chile where he grew up. At age 16 he decided to move back to the city of his birth, Montreal. It seems as right after that move he started making his way into the world of music, Montreal made it very easy as the city is a melting pot of various music establishments no matter the genre.

Initially, Gab’s influences came from the punk & rock side of things, bands such as NOFX, Fiskales Ad-Hok, Crudos, Mr. Bungle, and Slayer just to name a few. Gab’s musical background as a drummer landed him into a band “Man Kills Man” that he was part of for 13 years.

Montreal offered many musical “adventures” by night, and in one of those outings, Gab discovered the Jungle and D&B scene which led him to many other explorations in the electronic music scene. "I think it was at this point when I somehow swapped my drumset for two Technics turntables and a mixer”.

While shopping for vinyl he stumbled on a secondhand drum machine that quickly escalated to owning a few drum machines and a few synths that to this day he uses to sketch out projects. The rest is history…

A Special Note From The Label 😃

We are stoked to have these two artists on our new release, long time supporters of MINIM but most importantly our dear friends that we have not been able to visit as we regularly do. We wait anxiously for the borders to open so we can travel and hopefully hand-deliver their copies. Here at MINIM, we hope you enjoy playing and listening to this music as much as we enjoy getting this particular one out to you. This one is super special to us…

Always sitting slightly off-centre, Jay Tripwire is an artist that walks the line as industry staple and ever changing innovator.

Foremost Jay Tripwire is a Dj and his craft goes back to when every party was vinyl only and there was no sync button, an ethos still to this day Jay adheres to. Tripwire is getting old and has over 25 years under his belt professionally as a DJ and has toured extensively for 20 years with gigs taking him to over 200 cities worldwide. He might have blood clots from all that flying, but he drinks alot of fish oil.

His finely crafted extended sets deviate from the norm and as a DJ he encompasses a very wide range of underground music, and decades of digging for music to which his ears, neck and back have taken a serious beating from shows in how he walks with a swagger. Jay prepares extensively for every set of gigs with his personally crafted re edits to match his signature style of long drawn out blends create a rich tapestry of audio, where its not easy to tell where one song starts and the other ends (unless your a fucking shazzam nerd). Sometimes resident at Mr. C's legendary SuperFreq parties and a regular contributor to the label, some of the notable Label parties have been at BPM festival, NYC for Resolute, Alec Baldwins 63rd birthday, and of course Fabric in London. Jay Has played many of the worlds top clubs, ones that are current, ones that only older people would know and many underground spots that didn't have a fancy name- just sweaty walls.

Always sitting slightly off-centre, Jay Tripwire is an artist that walks the line as industry staple and ever changing innovator, releasing one standout release after another. It was his early vinyl releases that cemented his place as an originator that led to releasing over 300 vinyl records and hundreds of digital projects.

A veteran DJ, Ruslan began his career in 1995. He learned the craft from Matt E Love back in his Baselinelabs record shop in Framingham, Mass. He spent his time going through records and playing at the shop until famed Boston resident, DJ Manolo, noticed him and asked him to open for a live Jan Johnson performance. It went well, and he’s been laying down house music for the 20 years since, remaining motivated by his love of music and desire to keep the dance floor kicking.

In 2016, he began his passion project, Minim Records, a vinyl only platform, featuring artists like Pheek, Tijn, Jerome.c, Rithma, Coriesu, Kike Mayor, Yaroslav Lenzyak and more. The label allows him to find, fund, create, and release interesting music onto the scene.

He resides in New York, where a constant influx of music inspires him, and he is able to inspire the many dance floors in return.
